The teaser trailer for season 3 of The Wheel of Time is packed full of intense moments and images, promising an explosive beginning to next season when it releases in March 2025. While the trailer raises as many questions as it does answers so far, it's clear that we'll be spending quite some time in the Aiel Waste as Rand pursues his destiny.

One thing we do know about season 3 of The Wheel of Time is that it will use The Shadow Rising as the basis of its plot, but many of the changes the Prime Video series has made from the books have resulted in gaps in the timeline or missing events that may yet have repercussions we cannot know. But thanks to the trailer, it's clear that the next chapter in Prime Video's adaptation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books will adapt a number of memorable storylines from the source material.
12 Rand's Arrival at Rhuidean
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 24
The trailer clearly shows Rand at the head of a mixed group of Aiel and a woman in a sun hat (likely Moiraine), staring down at the cloud-shrouded ruins of the sacred city Rhuidean. While in The Shadow Rising, Rand enters the city proper with only Mat for company, as a rare exception to the rule that only aspiring Aiel clan chiefs or Wise Ones could enter the city, this moment may only represent Rand's first sight of the city and not him entering it.

11 Conflict With the Shaido
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 57
The Shaido are one of the twelve Aiel clans, and throughout the books are openly antagonistic towards Rand to the point of trying to prevent his entering Rhuidean. Once Rand is proclaimed the Car'a'carn – the prophesied leader of the Aiel – the Shaido reject him and flee the Three-Fold Land. They wind up being manipulated by Sammael, one of the 13 Forsaken in The Wheel of Time, who uses their rage and ambition to his advantage as the Shaido begin to spread chaos across the Westlands.
10 Moiraine Duels Lanfear
The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 52
✕ Remove Ads
After the events in the Aiel Waste, Rand and company stopped in Cairhien before moving on to Caemlyn. There, thanks to her foreknowledge from her visions in Rhuidean, Moiraine knew how to be in the right place at the right time to intervene and stop the Forsaken seductress Lanfear from attacking Rand and putting him under a Compulsion. Tacking Lanfear through the twisted redstone doorway ter'angreal they had brought with from Rhuidean, Moiraine and the Forsaken vanished into the twisted world of the Finn, and the ter'angreal melted behind them.
While Rand and the others assume this resulted in Moiraine's death, she was merely held prisoner by the Finn for some time, while Lanfear was released when Moridin, the reincarnated Ishamael, came to bargain for her release. Moiraine remained imprisoned by the Finn until Mat and Thom Merrilin braved the strange Tower of Genjei to rescue her. With the Finn not yet confirmed for the show, though, this fight may end even more poorly for Moiraine than it did in the books.

9 Liandrin’s Subjugation by Moghedien
The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 18
The opening scene from season 3, episode 1 was released at CCXP, and shows Liandrin and the other sisters of the Black Ajah making their explosive exit from the White Tower as the other Aes Sedai realize their betrayal. While in the books that happens outside the narrative during the events of The Great Hunt, it's clear that the show is changing that particular course of events.

What is clear from the trailer is one glimpse of Moghedien's skewering Liandrin with her glare, which matches up with when Liandrin and her sisters hid in the mansion of a Darkfriend in Amador in The Fires of Heaven, only to all be brought under Moghedien's sway. After a little sadistic teasing, Moghedien made it clear to Liandrin that the Aes Sedai was to be her pet and minion, and the ambitious sister was forced to submit.
8 Rand’s Trip Through the Glass Columns
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 25
In Rhuidean, Rand walks through a set of glass columns that are a powerful ter'angreal the Aiel use as a test for their clan chiefs and Wise Ones. These hundred-foot-tall pillars give those who approach them visions of the Aiel's distant past, revealing that the warrior people were once a group that served the Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends, and were bound to an oath of pacifism. Men who survive the test of the columns emerge with a golden dragon tattoo on one arm; when Rand emerges, he has one on each arm, proclaiming him as the Car'a'carn.

1 Rand Scene I've Been Waiting To See Since Wheel Of Time Started Should Finally Happen In Season 3
There's one Rand al'Thor scene I've been looking forward to ever since the show started, and I expect it to finally happen in season 3.
While we get no obvious glances at the glass columns, the hazy blue light and Rand's disoriented face match the lighting in the later shot of the great tree Avendesora, and the books place the plaza of the columns as near to the tree, in the heart of Rhuidean. It's possible some details may be changed from the books in this sequence, but given that Rand being announced as the Car'a'carn is an integral part of the books and the Prophecy of the Dragon, it's more likely this will come to pass the same way in the show.
7 Aviendha Becomes a Wise One
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 23
✕ Remove Ads
While it isn't confirmed that the Maiden of the Spear in this shot is Aviendha, her cadin'sor — the Aiel term for their desert garb — and general build match what we see of her in season 2. Upon arriving at Rhuidean with Rand, Aviendha is told by the Wise Ones that she cannot remain a Maiden; she possesses the ability to learn how to channel the One Power in The Wheel of Time, and so must begin training as a Wise One, much to her displeasure.
6 Moiraine Sees Many Futures
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 35
Moiraine enters Rhuidean at the same time as Rand, Mat, and Aviendha, but her journey uses a different ter'angreal, a set of three interlinked metal rings standing together that act similarly to the silver arches the White Tower uses to test novices and Accepted. While that ter'angreal tests a woman with temptation, though, the three rings show Moiraine a host of potential futures that seem to leave her all the more determined to help Rand, regardless of her fate.

The Wheel Of Time Season 3 Trailer: Moiraine Must Die To Save Rand As War Continues
The first trailer for The Wheel of Time season 3 has been released, and it teases an epic return to the World of the Wheel and Rand's journey.
1
While Moiraine in the books is fairly cryptic about her visions of the future, she does make it clear that she sees Rand's survival as the keystone to any good future, and that many of those visions indicated that his survival would require her sacrifice. This likely led to her impulsive choice to tackle Lanfear through the twisted redstone doorway; we'll have to see if the Prime Video series allows her to survive. However, due to the greater importance of her character in the show, it's hard to imagine a long-term absence for Moiraine after fighting Lanfear.
5 Perrin Defends the Two Rivers
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 56
✕ Remove Ads
When Mat chooses to follow Rand to the Aiel Waste, Perrin heads back to the Two Rivers to follow up on rumors that Whitecloaks have been harassing people in the area. There they find not only Whitecloaks giving the people of Emond's Field the boot, but a massive army of Trollocs nearby. Despite all odds, Perrin manages to convince the Children of the Light to help him defend the village, and leads the mix of Whitecloaks and villagers to victory against the Trollocs in the Battle of Emond's Field. The Wheel of Time season 2's ending notably set this up by having Perrin make enemies with Whitelcloak member Dain Bornhald.
4 Egwene’s Ascension to Accepted
The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 22
✕ Remove Ads
After the Battle of Falme, Egwene returned to the White Tower, where Siuan Sanche informed her that she was to be raised to the Accepted and, with Elayne and Nynaeve, charged with helping track down the Black Ajah. As it seems the show may skip visiting the Stone of Tear, along with the rest of The Dragon Reborn, we'll see what the context is around Egwene becoming Accepted, since she's still also supposed to follow Rand to the Aiel Waste. Still, the reappearance of this ter'angreal makes it clear that this season will see Egwene earn her Great Serpent ring.
3 Elayne Becomes Queen of Andor
Knife of Dreams, Chapter 35
Given that Knife of Dreams is the eleventh book in the series, and that the Amazon show has yet to show any of the courtly intrigue that almost destroys Andor, it's unlikely that season 3 will show us Elayne ascending to the Lion Throne itself. Still, the shot of her donning a crown in the trailer, as well as rumors that Queen Morgase and Elayne's half-brother Galad are cast for season 3, heavily implies that this storyline is about to kick off, at least in some form.
✕ Remove Ads
Interestingly, all rumors about Galad's casting have the character listed as "Galad Trakand" (via WOTSeries), which is odd since, in the books, Galad is a member of House Damodred. Meanwhile, no rumors have appeared about casting for Elayne's full brother, Gawyn Trakand. It's possible the two characters are being combined in some way for the show, although given that Galad becomes a Whitecloak and Gawyn Egwene's Warder, such a combination would definitely have severe narrative repercussions.
2 Lan Trains Rand As A Swordmaster
The Great Hunt, Chapter 1
In both The Eye of the World and The Great Hunt, Lan spends some time teaching Rand what he can of the intricacies of sword combat, including the fateful Sheathing the Sword technique he eventually uses to defeat Demandred at the Last Battle. The Amazon series, by comparison, left no time for such training, so seeing Lan and Rand practicing sword forms together is a promising indication that this essential bit of Rand's journey will finally happen.

1 Mat's Fateful Visit to Avendesora
The Shadow Rising, Chapter 24
Mat did visit Rhuidean with Rand, but while Rand went off to the glass column ter'angreal, Mat instead found a twisted redstone doorway, stepping through and finding himself in the domain of the fox-like Eelfinn, who only spoke to him once he made three demands: to have the holes in his memory fixed, to be free of Aes Sedai influence and the One Power, and to be away from them and back in Rhuidean. The Eelfinn called him a fool for not setting a price for his wishes, and complied maliciously.
Mat awoke hanging by his neck from Avendesora, near death, with a strange fox-shaped medallion and a spear-like weapon called an ashandarei in his possession. Rand's timely arrival saved Mat from a hanging, and the two returned to the Aiel encampment. In time, Mat would realize the strange items were part of his wishes – the medallion is a ter'angreal that makes him untouchable by the Power, and the spear can be used to travel in and out of the realm of the Finn.

Wheel Of Time's Huge Mat Twist Makes A Moiraine Theory Even More Likely
What happened to Mat in The Wheel of Time season 2 supports a major theory about a change to Moiraine Damodred's future in the TV show.
2
It will be interesting to see just how this plays out in the Amazon show, as skipping the Stone of Tear in The Wheel of Time also means skipping Mat's first time through a redstone doorway, when he visits the Aelfinn and is told he must go to Rhuidean. Moreover, the show has already had Mat's memories filled in by blowing the Horn of Valere at the Battle of Falme. It's possible the Finn may not appear at all in the Amazon series, but that would be disappointing, as their machinations are key to both Mat and Moiraine's stories.
